Pionnier de la photographie de paysages, qu'il élève au rang d'art grâce à sa grande maîtrise technique - en particulier sur le contrôle de l'exposition avec son invention du zone system - il était aussi un défenseur passionné de la protection de l'environnement.

Il a utilisé sa notoriété pour sensibiliser le public aux questions de conservation et a contribué à la création de plusieurs parcs nationaux.

The whole world is, to me, very much "alive" - all the little growing things, even the rocks. I can't look at a swell bit of grass and earth, for instance, without feeling the essential life - the things going on - within them. The same goes for a mountain, or a bit of the ocean, or a magnificent piece of old wood.
