J.W. of Derby - Le gladiateur à la chandelle (1765)

Une image et des mots. L'anglais Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) est l'auteur de ce tableau intitulé Trois personnes examinant le gladiateur à la lueur d'une chandelle (1765) qui illustre bien la formidable maîtrise du clair-obscur de l'artiste.
Les vers qui suivent sont du poète américain Walt Whitman (1819-1892), extraits de Leaves of grass (Feuilles d'herbe) :
