Le vide grenier du dimanche. Deux clichés de la photographe américaine Ruth Orkin (1921-1985), dont j’avais déjà présenté ici, en août 2010, son image la plus célèbre : An American Girl in Italy.

Née à Boston et élevée à Los Angeles, elle développe très tôt une passion pour la photographie. Après un bref passage à l’Université de Californie du Sud, elle s’installe à New York où elle commence sa carrière comme photographe indépendante. Elle travaille alors pour Life, Look ou The New York Times, mêlant regard curieux et sens aigu de la composition.

Ses photos racontent la vie urbaine avec humour, tendresse et vivacité - des scènes saisies sur le vif, pleines de mouvement et d’humanité. My mother said that when I was young I was constantly saying "Look at this - Look at that". I think that taking pictures must be my way of asking people to "Look at this - Look at that".

If my photographs make the viewer feel what I did when I first took them - "Isn't this funny,... terrible... moving... beautiful?" - then I've accomplished my purpose.

Ces mots résument bien sa démarche : inviter à voir autrement, à s’arrêter un instant sur le monde et ses émotions ordinaires.
